Tuesday, May 19, marks the annual observation of National Asian and Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, an occasion to increase awareness of HIV within these communities and stress the importance of testing, care, and treatment.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), while Asians in the U.S. have a low and declining HIV incidence rate relative to other racial/ethnic groups -- 2% in 2010 -- the absolute number of new cases is increasing along with the growth of the Asian population. More than 80% of Asians diagnosed with HIV in 2013 were gay and bisexual men, and 1 in 5 Asians with HIV are not aware they are infected.
